What’s New in Care Box? Update #10 – December 2019

While the General Election has been in full swing, it’s been business as usual behind the scenes for the Care Box team. There’s plenty of new material in Care Box this month. In the main library you’ll find a new Key Information sheet detailing how Pensions should be treated in a local authority Financial Assessment. It’s a topic that regularly crops up, and we hope this key information sheet brings some clarity, addressing the majority of questions that regularly arise. Looking for facts and figures to quote? Or fresh information for your website? This year’s Later Life UK factsheet from Age UK can now be found in the Advisers’ Toolkit…

What’s New in Care Box? Update #8 – October 2019

“Case Studies” section. We’re often asked for examples of how things relating to care work “in the real world”, so we hope you’ll find the new Case Studies section of Care Box of real value. We will be sharing situations we encounter in our day to day work with clients, as well as details about cases that have gone before the Ombudsman resulting in rulings that we believe will be of interest to our members. Our first case study describes a situation involving Equity Release and care at home… We’ve also upgraded the search function in Care Box, added some new Key Information Sheets, and updated others.

What’s New in Care Box? Update #7 – September 2019

New Deep Dive – dealing with clients from cognitive decline to dementia

When our Technical Director, Tony Miles, was talking at the PFS roadshows earlier this year, his session about preparing for the increasing number of vulnerable clients (or their family members) who may be showing signs of natural cognitive decline, right through to advanced dementia, was very well received by advisers. Our new, 48 page comprehensive guide, published this month, delves into this in detail. What do advisers need to know? How can businesses prepare for some of the difficult conversations that may be needed? What questions do they need to be asking about their own policies and procedures? Download your copy of Dealing with Clients across the spectrum from natural cognitive ageing to dementia” now.

What’s New on Care Box? Update #6 – August 2019

When someone needs care, the burden of that care often falls mainly on one person – a role which can be exhausting and overwhelming both emotionally and physically. Our new Key Information Sheet “Easing the load – Advice for Family Carers” aims to provide a starting point for people in this situation to find ways to ease the burden and find support. Remember that as a Care Box member you’re free to take this content and share it in face to face consultations, on your website or in your communications in whatever ways you feel work best for your business and your clients.
New tools in the Adviser toolkit
This month we’ve added 2 useful online tools from AVIVA which work well together – a long-term care shortfall calculator, and a long-term care comparison tool. With the first, you can Enter your client’s care costs, income and outgoings at the time care is being received, and click ‘Calculate’ to display the likely shortfall, while the second tool produces a comparison showing the effect on capital between purchasing an Immediate Needs Annuity and using an investment to fund long term care costs.

What’s New on Care Box? Update #5 – July 2019

As was highlighted in last month’s 5-minute listen, property is playing an increasing role in the funding of care. We’ve produced a comprehensive guide to the role that property can play in paying for care, and you’ll now find it in the Care Box Library.
As with all our Deep Dives, reading this guide, “The Role of Residential Property in Paying for Care”, can count as an hour of CPD, and a set of self-test questions to accompany it will be published on Care Box a little later in July.
New 5 minute read – “Grandpa on a Skateboard” by Tim Farmer… OPG guide to LPAs and EPAs… plus new Key Information Sheet…

What’s New on Care Box? Update #4 – June 2019

What do you do if you begin to suspect that a client may be suffering from cognitive decline, and you’re concerned about their ongoing capacity for making decisions about their finances? One answer is to pre-empt this possibility by using a “diminished capacity form” which you can ask clients to complete at a review, long before this becomes an issue. You’ll now find an example of such a form in the Adviser Toolkit section of Care Box. It’s also something we’ve opened up for discussion in the members-only group on LinkedIn. Don’t forget to sign up to the group…

What’s New on Care Box? Update #2 – April 2019

There’s now a “Start Here” page, to help members discover what’s available in Care Box, how to navigate their way through the many resources and find what they need.

You’ll also see a new button in the main menu for our members-only LinkedIn group, which provides a private space to share and discuss care-related questions, comments, and observations with other members. If this becomes a popular and well-used feature, we’ll look to replace it in the near future with a custom-made discussion forum within the Care Box website.

With the launch of Care Box there’s also a new structure to the MCC Care Newsletter…
